Christopher Shelton

Historian

Chris Shelton has been in the pharmaceutical industry for the past 26 years and has managed for 13 of those years. Throughout his career he has received many accolades, including Circle of Excellence several years in a row, a nomination to President’s Council, and the Eli Lilly Quality Award for improving communications across the entire US sales division. As a Manager, he has coached several members of his sales teams over the years to their own accomplishments, including Presidents’ Club, Rookie of the Year, and various corporate assignments and manager promotions throughout the country. He achieved his most rewarding title as Regional Business Director covering 34 states throughout the US in 2014.

Chris begin his career at Ciba Giegy, now Novartis, and was responsible for selling breakthrough products such as Habitrol, the first smoking cessation patch to the US Market, as well as products in the Cardio-vascular market. He was an Executive Sales Manager at Xerox, responsible for maintaining and growing new Federal Government and College Accounts in the state of Oregon.

From there, Chris worked at Johnson and Johnson LifeScan, where he was promoted to a Sr. Sales Hospital Representative in his first year after converting several Boehinger Mannheim Hospital accounts over to J&J. Chris had the largest quota in the State and the largest geographic area for the district. He conducted in-services for RNs, CDEs, Patients and Endocrinologists throughout the state of Oregon.

At Eli Lilly and Company he worked in Primary Care, focusing on the IM, FP and NP. Within one year he was a top performer and was promoted to Diabetes Specialist, where he continued to increase sales and establish successful partner relationships for flawless implementation of sales strategies. Chris worked closely with Sales Training at Lilly to ensure new hires were confident in message delivery and using various selling techniques based on customer needs. He developed several local Endo speakers into national thought leaders and area speakers and was recognized for his many efforts with the company.

Chris’ next assignment with Eli Lilly and Company was as part of the Diabetes Operations Business Unit were he was responsible for running the Diabetes Affiliate through day to day operations by managing Brand Team Members, Sales Training, Market Research, and Managed Care for better overall implementation. He was promoted to a Sales and Marketing Associate where he managed several entry level associates which allowed him to understand the full scope of the Diabetes Affiliate within corporate headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. This allowed him to better understand the marketplace and drive fundamental behaviors with sales representatives. Chris was also responsible for direct line communication to Area Directors and District Managers for flawless communication of strategy and business planning. He redesigned the implemented Sales and Marketing input and output meetings as well as researched and launched message interventions for new sales materials for several brands. As the point person for three National Sales Meetings, Chris successfully launched and managed a $1m budget while selecting outside vendors and managing their efforts as needed.

Chris later joined Ferring Pharmaceuticals where he had the opportunity to manage all but one business unit in the company, including Orthopedics, Gastroenterology and Urology. Chris assisted the Marketing team as the Subject Matter Expert for the Urology Business Unit where his sales strategies were implemented at a National Sales Meeting. He served as Regional Business Director for the Western Region where he oversaw 4 managers covering 34 states. His most recent experience was with Horizon Pharmaceuticals where he received multiple awards for consistently growing all three Specialty Division brands by 10+% over each month throughout the year.

Before he began his career in the pharmaceutical industry, Chris played Division I basketball at Ball State University where he was a 4-year letterman and joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in the Spring of 1983. He earned a Master’s Degree at the University of Tulsa, while working as a Graduate Assistant basketball coach, and later moved to Oregon to coach at the University of Portland. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife Sylvia and is the proud father of three beautiful girls, Racqueal, Cristina and Caris Shelton.
